What is the Enigma story and how has this startup fared since inception?
Enigma Automobiles Private Limited, founded in the year 2015, is driving electric mobility more consistently and more enthusiastically than any other mobility group. With the company's tenets grounded in quality and matchless technology, Enigma plans to bring attractive electric models onto the road at affordable prices and help India make a breakthrough. The company's values are based on superior quality and cutting-edge technology. Enigma has successfully launched three nuanced e-scooters in markets: Ambier, Crink, and GT-450, which have performed exceptionally well. Our manufacturing units are set in Mandideep, Bhopal and Uppal, Hyderabad, spanning over 60,000 sq.ft and manufactures up to 60,000 vehicles per annum. Enigma has maintained a fast growth pace and has sold over 5000 smart electric two-wheeler vehicles in India. We aim to expand across Asia, Europe and Latin America by the calendar year 2022.
How indigenous are Enigma products? What kind of R&D efforts back the drive for local content?
Enigma has designed the future of transportation with advanced thinking and equal emphasis on cutting-edge technology. Each of our electric scooters combines innovative technology, human-oriented design, and new experiences. We have set a new benchmark for Indian manufacturing and have built superior quality electric scooters, as per the needs of the Indian roads and audience. Also, we won't shy away from saying we have everything in-house, right from product designing, engineering to manufacturing. We develop the motor and engines in our way, as per the needs of the audience and the Indian roads.
Currently, we are working on a very path breaking technology, and we are just a week away from its launch – an all-Indian electric motorcycle! Our technical strength and years spent in the design and technology of this vehicle shall be a testament to what Enigma – an Indian electric scooter brand, can do. The product is built with a strong focus on R&D and design aesthetics to create freedom in mobility, like never seen before. Enigma is all set to revolutionise the Indian automobile sector!
What about the battery – perhaps the most critical part in any EV?
Having a good quality battery in any electric vehicle is very important as it is the powerhouse of the vehicle. We are moving towards LFP batteries as it is perfect for India's humid tropical climate. It is ideal for high-temperature resistance to improved thermal stability through efficient heat dissipation. The added benefit of using LFP batteries is that it offers a life span of over 3000 cycles or up to 5 years, and it takes up less time to charge than usual. LFP batteries are also environmentally friendly, helping us to develop sustainable mobility. Also, NMC is another option that we rely on for battery, battery storage power stations. It has higher chemistry cells to help us get the maximum output from it.
One of the problems is going to be the charging infrastructure in housing colonies (we had one example of a person taking his bike to the 5th floor). Are we ready?
Yes, it's a known and most pressing problem of the EV ecosystem. Both the government and the companies are working in sync to address this roadblock. At Enigma, we addressed this problem even before starting this company. All our vehicles come with swappable battery options, which allows anyone to switch and charge the battery anytime, anywhere. This also means you can take the battery to the top floor to charge as well.
The market appears to be fragmented with a fairly large number of players. What is the USP of Enigma?
The EV market is in its booming stage. There are several new entrants every day and growing competition. However, what sets us apart is 'Customisation' as per the customers' needs and betting on the high quality of the raw materials since the first day. We design and build the vehicle according to our customer's needs and specifications. We lookout for the minutest details and provide superior quality products setting new benchmarks at the global level.
How will the imminent entry of a large player impact the market – sales of electric two-wheelers in 2020 were less than 1% of the total market?
The EV market will be a local market in the years to come as it is a service-oriented market, and all the prominent players are already there with their flagship vehicles. The market is going through a significant shift wherein the old practices will be challenged, and the conventional ways of doing business are getting old. The Indian economy will soon be shaped by multiple micro-segments of more agile and flexible manufacturers in their methods of operation. The micro-mobility sector shall bring in the next wave of urban transportation in India.
When are you launching the electric motorcycle, and how aggressively will it be priced?
We are ecstatic to announce the launch of India's very first electric motorcycle. It shall be available for pre-bookings before Diwali. We cannot wait for our consumers to experience the cutting-edge technology and classic design that builds the Enigma electric motorcycle together. The consumers shall be in for a pleasant surprise for the kind of product that we have to offer.
