From Logistics to Aerospace: IIT Madras Pushes Boundaries in Fully Autonomous Robotics Innovation

IIT Madras continues to lead India’s charge in robotics and automation. At its Autonomous Systems Lab (ASL), led by Dr. Bijo Sebastian, researchers are developing next-generation no-human-intervention robotic systems that could transform industries ranging from logistics to aerospace.

The lab, funded by initiatives such as the Accenture–IITM Centre of Excellence and SERB, focuses on advanced areas: autonomous navigation, AI-driven fault detection, multi-agent coordination, and intelligent robotic grasping. Among the student researchers driving this innovation are Karthik Chandrasekaran, Anirban Nag, and Nagamanikandan Govindan — part of a new wave of engineers designing for the real world.

According to Dr. Sebastian, the vision is clear: “Automation should evolve beyond assistance — machines should self-adapt, self-correct, and operate without human oversight.”

This work dovetails with India’s National Mission on AI and Make in India policies, giving Indian manufacturing a shot at leapfrogging global competitors. By integrating AI with robotics at scale, IIT Madras hopes to cut downtime, improve reliability, and drastically lower production costs for industries ranging from automotive to defense.
