Automotive Demand Fuels Robot Growth as India Climbs to 7th Globally, Setting the Stage for Industry 4.0 Expansion

India’s industrial automation sector is witnessing unprecedented growth, with 9,120 industrial robots installed across factories in 2024, marking a 7% increase from 2023. According to the International Federation of Robotics (IFR), this positions India as the 7th largest industrial robotics market globally, demonstrating accelerating adoption of automation technologies.

The automotive sector dominates, accounting for nearly 45% of all installations, followed by the rubber, plastics, and electronics industries. Key players driving this growth include ABB, FANUC, KUKA, Yaskawa, and rising Indian startups such as Systemantics Robotics and GreyOrange, providing flexible automation solutions for small and medium enterprises.

Despite this growth, India’s robot density — robots per 10,000 workers — remains below the global average, highlighting significant potential for further expansion. Experts predict sectors like pharmaceuticals, food processing, and electronics will lead the next wave of automation adoption, with collaborative robots, autonomous guided vehicles, and AI-enabled robotics gaining momentum.

Government initiatives like Make in India and PLI schemes further catalyze investments, attracting both foreign and domestic automation vendors. As adoption rises, India moves closer to smart factories and Industry 4.0 readiness, positioning itself as a key hub for industrial automation.

"Welcome to the latest in industrial automation news. India has installed 9,120 industrial robots in 2024, marking a 7% increase over last year. The automotive sector led this growth, accounting for 45% of installations, followed by rubber, plastics, and electronics. Key players driving this growth include ABB, FANUC, KUKA, Yaskawa, and startups like GreyOrange. Despite progress, India’s robot density remains below global leaders, indicating room for growth. With initiatives like Make in India and PLI schemes, the country is rapidly moving toward smart factories and Industry 4.0, cementing its position as a global automation hub."
