Section 1: Personal Journey and Leadership
What inspired you to take on the role of Chairperson at Astec Valves & Fittings Pvt Ltd?
My journey in industrial manufacturing has been shaped by a deep passion for engineering excellence and a commitment to India’s manufacturing growth. The opportunity to lead Astec was both a challenge and an honour. India is emerging as a global manufacturing powerhouse, and I wanted to contribute by driving innovation, enhancing operational efficiencies, and strengthening India's position in the global valve and fittings sector. Moreover, as a woman in a male-dominated industry, I was motivated to set an example and pave the way for more women to take on leadership roles in manufacturing.
What leadership principles have been instrumental in achieving these results?
My leadership philosophy is deeply rooted in empowerment, innovation, and accountability. I believe in fostering a culture where employees feel valued, motivated, and encouraged to take ownership of their work. In an industry as dynamic as ours, agility is key – I ensure that we embrace technological advancements while staying true to the core values of quality and customer satisfaction. Moreover, I prioritise mentorship, particularly for women, to build a more diverse leadership pipeline within the organisation.
Section 2: Achievements and Contributions
What strategies have you implemented to ensure sustainable growth for the Astec Group?
Sustainable growth, especially in India's evolving industrial sector, requires a multi-faceted approach. At Astec, we have focused on diversifying our product portfolio, investing in automation, and strengthening our domestic and international supply chains. We have also formed strategic partnerships to drive technological advancements. Additionally, I emphasize financial prudence, ensuring that we balance profitability with long-term investments in innovation, sustainability, and workforce development.
Could you share some initiatives or practices you’ve introduced to uphold quality and operational efficiency?
Quality is the foundation of our success. We have adopted lean manufacturing principles, implemented Six Sigma methodologies, and invested in state-of-the-art automated systems to reduce human error and enhance precision. Regular training programs ensure that our workforce stays updated with the latest industry standards. Additionally, we have set up a robust feedback mechanism that allows us to continuously improve based on customer insights and evolving market needs.
How have you fostered a positive and inclusive workplace culture within your organisation?
A thriving workplace culture is essential for long-term success. At Astec, we have introduced policies that promote gender diversity and equal opportunities. I have actively encouraged more women to join the manufacturing sector through better hiring policies and mentorship initiatives. Additionally, we have created a supportive work environment with leadership training, well-being programs, and flexible work policies that help employees balance personal and professional growth. The result is a highly motivated team that is aligned with the company’s mission and values.
What challenges have you faced in maintaining Astec’s reputation, and how have you overcome them?
Reputation in the industrial sector is built over years but can be challenged by external factors such as market fluctuations, competition, and supply chain disruptions. One major challenge has been ensuring consistent quality while scaling operations. We have overcome this by implementing strict quality control measures, maintaining transparency with our clients, and continuously innovating to stay ahead of the competition. Furthermore, as India competes with global manufacturing hubs, we have focused on cost-effectiveness without compromising quality, making Astec a trusted name both in India and internationally.
Section 3: Perspectives and Recognition
What is your vision for increasing diversity and inclusivity in the industrial sector?
Diversity is not just a moral imperative – it’s a business advantage. My vision is to see more women actively participating in India's industrial and manufacturing sector, from shop floors to boardrooms. To achieve this, we need structured policies that promote gender diversity, skill development programs targeted at women, and industry-wide initiatives to create a more inclusive environment. I strongly advocate for scholarships and internships for women in manufacturing, mentorship programs for aspiring female leaders, and company policies that support work-life balance. India has immense talent, and by bringing more women into industrial leadership, we can drive sustainable and inclusive growth.
What advice would you give to aspiring leaders, especially women, looking to make an impact in manufacturing and industrial operations?
My advice to aspiring women leaders is simple – be fearless, be resilient, and believe in your capabilities. The manufacturing industry may be traditionally male-dominated, but that is changing rapidly, and women have an essential role to play in shaping the future. Never shy away from learning new skills, taking up challenges, and voicing your ideas. Seek mentorship and build strong networks, as collaboration and support systems are vital for professional growth. Most importantly, don’t wait for opportunities – create them. India is at a pivotal
moment in industrial growth, and women should be at the forefront of this transformation.
