Experts from leading machine tool manufacturers of Taiwan present their views on the trends in auto component manufacturing. Excerpts from a Roundtable.
The Indian auto-components industry has experienced healthy growth over the last few years and is expected to further grow to US$ 200 billion by 2026. The industry has also witnessed a drastic evolution in important technological advancements. Therefore, remaining competitive could pose a greater challenge than many manufacturers realise.
As Taiwan is the fourth largest machine tools exporter in the world, its advanced manufacturing technology and rich international service experience are trusted by world renowned auto-components manufacturers. In this Roundtable, we invited a few Taiwanese machine tool makers to share their insights regarding Indian auto-component manufacturing challenges and the solutions that will enable them to stay ahead of the game.
What are the manufacturing challenges faced by Indian auto component manufacturers in recent year? What kind of manufacturing solution your company could provide?
Tiger Wang, General Manager, Palmary Machinery: For automotive industry, the final machining process – Grinding – is very important for various automotive parts. Considering its high accuracies requirement, how to choose the suitable grinding machine and arrange the production line is key point as well.
PALMARY Machinery, trusted by many international automotive parts manufacturers, not only could design custom grinding machines and combine different grinding application into one production line for its higher efficiency, but also designs new models for automatic upgrade purpose. Recently, PALMARY has developed a new model, OCD-M CNC Cylindrical Grinder Multi-spindle series, for the new automated trend. The performance of one-time chuck with many grinding processes plus measuring systems has generated interest in many clients.
Jason Lee, Sales Director, Chin Fong Machine: Forging technology has been developed specially for components used in the automobile industries and ideal to meet high precision, high rigidity, high speed, automation and intelligent motion requirements. Also, more and more forging products are developed with this trend nowadays.
To cope with this demand, Chin Fong Machine provides relevant manufacturing solutions for the auto components industry. Our WF series is specified for warm-hot forging working environment. Optimised design upgrades the forging capacity and offers better production quality. Also, it is designed on the concept of energy conservation and environmentally friendly as it is the best forging machine for the next decade.
Kris Hsieh, General Manager, Manford Machinery: In recent years, several automobile manufacturers have shifted their plants to India, so the demand of automotive components has become greater and greater. Component manufacturers might have many challenges like rising production cost, delivery time, manpower shortage or increase in wages. Manford can provide whole plant machinery design, planning, installation, production line optimisation, technical support, employee training and so on, to help business owners to overcome their difficulties.
We also offer friction welding machines for manufacturers who producing electric vehicle batteries.
Trends such industry 4.0 impact the metalworking sector globally. How could you help India manufacturers prepare for that?
Tim Chang, General Manager, Kao Ming Machinery: Before implementing Industry 4.0, a well and strong foundation is very important.
Kao Ming Machinery is the leader in professional double column machining centres. With more than 50-year experience, Kao Ming can offer a stable and high-quality foundation which is equipped with Ethernet and remote diagnostic function to support Indian manufacturers keep up with Industry 4.0. With these functions we can know the condition of the machine and help the customer to sort out the problem in shortest time.
We believe Kao Ming is not only a supplier but also offers a strong support for India manufacturers to transform to Industry 4.0 era.
Tony Lin, President, Roller King Enterprise: It is apparent that component suppliers should make some changes to adapt to the new trend, the so called ‘Industry 4.0’. In the context of the current competitors, the one who holds advanced, smarter technology is going to win the market.
Roller King specialises in manufacturing forming rollers, pipe making machines, roll forming machines and other peripheral equipment. Roller King offers smart roll forming solutions, that make sure that the whole forming process is well under control, and every product comes with the best quality; with the intelligent automatic system, just input the data, and let Roller King’s machine do the work. All the features definitely are what you need to reach the best quality and lead the market, be efficient and intelligently control the manufacturing process.
Steven Lee, Vice President, SEYI: It is inevitable for Indian auto component suppliers to upgrade to intelligent manufacturing when auto OEMs nowadays require much higher level of manufacturing technology under the challenge of Industry 4.0.
SEYI is a leading manufacturer of medium-large servo presses. SEYI provides ‘Intelligent Manufacturing Solution’ with three applications: “Smart Machinery”, “Smart Production” and “Smart Management.” Under this platform, machines with connectivity, information visualisation and system integration can be achieved, making the production process digitalised, smart and flexible. These benefits will help users to manage the quality effectively and enhance the productivity.
