Edge Computing Live – The ONCITE Solution
Published on : Friday 03-04-2020
Edge cloud data centre ensures data control in data transmissions along the supply chain and in high-availability processes.
Industrial edge computing is considered a new paradigm. It combines the cloud approach with advantages in terms of data protection, autonomy, latency and energy consumption. The functionality and resulting effects will be demonstrated at Hannover Messe (now postponed to July 13-17, 2020) using the “All In One Edge” solution ONCITE, at various exhibition stands. The server components and the platform come from the Friedhelm Loh Group, to which Rittal also belongs. Partners like Bosch Connected Industry provide applications that enable IIoT applications and the rapid digital transformation of manufacturing. ONCITE is a highly available and flexibly scalable edge cloud data centre with a real-time capable edge cloud stack and a pre-installed, extensible industry-specific range of edge applications. The solution was recently awarded first place in the “Innovation Champions Award” by WirtschaftsWoche at the “Summit of World Market Leaders 2020”.
The event honours companies that safeguard the future of German medium-sized businesses with their innovative strength. The adjudicators assessed ONCITE as a lighthouse solution for the German industry.
ONCITE is an all-in-one solution for the quick processing and analysing of industrial data at the production site. The factory-internal Edge Cloud data centre enables the digital transformation of the factory and at the same time the data sovereign adaptation to various digital production platforms as planned by VW and BMW. The appliance brings together all the data of a company and via special connectors it can be made available to other partners or customers in such a way that the company retains control over data.
Demonstration of Gaia-X compliant data connector
ONCITE is regarded as elementary for Gaia-X, a major digital project run by the German government, which aims at a networked data infrastructure in a vital European ecosystem. The ONCITE edge cloud data centre supports the establishment of a trusted infrastructure for data exchange and common rules for cross-company authentication and access control. At Hannover Messe, a new Gaia-X compliant data connector will be launched as part of ONCITE. This guarantees auditable, secure transmission paths for data to third parties.
As an edge cloud data centre, ONCITE is a compatible addition to the classic cloud platforms: as a fully managed solution on request via its own shared private cloud operated and hosted in Germany with IT security according to BSI standard. For further data processing in multi-cloud systems up to the low-cost data storage with “green energy” at the Lefdal Mine Datacenter, all data utilisation paths are open. Businesses can use the appliance for both hybrid and multi-cloud solutions and get the best of both worlds – data control and real-time capability combined with networking with other clouds.
Various use cases for ONCITE will be presented at Hannover Messe at the following booths: Bosch Rexroth (Hall 6/C58); Smart Factory (Hall 8/D18); Rittal (Hall 11/E06); Fraunhofer (Hall 16/C18); IBM (Hall 16/A12); and SEF Smart Electronic Factory e.V (Hall 17/D40).
With German Edge Cloud, IoTOS, iNNOVOCloud and Rittal, four subsidiaries of the Friedhelm Loh Group are in the ONCITE consortium. They all contribute different expertise, which, in combination with the services of Bosch Connected Industry, makes this all-in-one solution possible. Rittal supplies the server components, iNNOVOCloud is building the Edge Cloud platform together with German Edge Cloud, and partners Bosch and IoTOS are supplying the applications that make IIoT applications possible.
