Atharv

Please explain your project briefly in a few sentences. What inspired you to work on this project?

Our project, ‘Active Prosthetic Ankle for Bike Riding in Lower Limb Amputees’, aims to address the mobility challenges faced by amputees, particularly when riding bikes. We first encountered this problem during a previous Hackathon and, after further research, realised the profound need for a solution. This realisation inspired us to develop a device that could restore the lost mobility and independence of amputees. Our project integrates three key systems: EMG sensors to detect muscle signals, a feedback system using rotary vibrators, and a remote control system for seamless operation.

How was the response from visitors and peers to your project at Automation Expo 2024?

Harshwardhan

The response was incredibly positive. Visitors were highly engaged, asking thoughtful questions and providing valuable feedback. They appreciated our innovative approach and offered insights into the concerns and needs of amputees, which helped us improve our project further.

Did you receive any offers or encouragement from exhibiting companies or visiting industry professionals?

Yes, we received several offers from fintech companies and government officials interested in funding our project as a startup. Additionally, we established connections with mentors and vendors in the prosthetic industry, which will be vital for the future development of our product.

‘We met with amputees and prosthetic experts to gather insights’

-Prof Avesahemad S N Husainy, Mentor

How did you find the initial idea and what was your reaction to it?

As we were already familiar with the challenges faced by amputees, we delved deeper into research and realised the problem's intensity. We met with amputees and prosthetic experts to gather insights and brainstorm potential solutions. After discussing various concepts with the team, we were confident in the project's potential and began development.

What was the response from the students to your guidance and the deliberations that followed?

The students were highly receptive and eager to learn. They were enthusiastic about experimenting with different ideas and showed great adaptability throughout the project. Their dedication and willingness to engage in discussions were truly commendable.

How does the college encourage and inspire students to go beyond theory and experiment with projects?

The college fosters a project-based learning environment that promotes practical experimentation. From the first year, students are involved in mini projects, which help them develop a hands-on approach. With facilities like 3D printing labs, design labs, and workshops, students are given the resources and encouragement to explore their ideas beyond theoretical knowledge.
