Growth in the development of the Internet of Things (IoT) is making it affordability across the small and medium companies to use digital twin technology, which also enables real-time devices, data interpretation software, and bandwidth in one platform to further improves the operations in the worksites.
According to Gartner, it is expected that half of the global large industrial companies will incorporate digital twin technology to enhance productivity by the end of 2021. A digital twin is a developed concept, as manufactures in the global market already using 3D renderings of computer-aided design (CAD) models for the past decade. In other words, it is just a virtual version of real objects that can vary from building to the automobile to industrial equipment. It also integrates IoT sensors which further transit data from an object to the digital twin, the process will lead the manufacturers to make an accurate representation of the actual assets that are expected to be commercialized.
The use of a digital twin against its challenging factors
Considering the small manufactures in the market, the cost is the main factor for them to take over on the digitalizing process. A digital twin is operating on high initial investment and requires an up-to-date IT infrastructure, that may be difficult to use by the small and medium companies. According to the industry experts, all manufacturing companies must focus on the digital twin emerging technology to prepare for when it disrupts the industry in the near future. Companies can use the digital twin technology to monitor the process performance of different parts in an asset, later it used to monitor an entire machine or system.
Information such as condition data, such as pressure, temperature, operational status, and location in the facility are the main factors on which digital twin technology is based to operate in the industrial site. The technology is most preferred to assist the manufacturing companies to understand the product input and the issues to prevent its failure in the final product. For instance, if the companies are aiming to evaluate the data related to improving customer service and product quality, if simply extract data from the sales and marketing team to evaluate new business opportunities from the new products.
In conclusion, the digital twin technology can assist companies in the manufacturing sector to digitalize its operational processes and improve its asset management to further optimize the maintenance, productivity, customer satisfaction, and other aspects of the product or company’s services.
