Amsterdam Energy ArenA – The Next Phase of Partnership
Published on : Monday 30-11--0001
Power management company Eaton, Nissan and The Mobility House have finalised a deal with Amsterdam Energy Arena to implement one of Europe's largest energy storage systems used in a commercial building. The partners are developing and implementing a large energy storage system at the car park of the Amsterdam ArenA stadium with a minimum capacity of 3 megawatts that can be upscaled when needed. The energy storage system functions as an emergency power supply, capturing peaks in energy demand and will ensure stability in the regular energy network. It helps with strong changes in power generation as well as delivery - including more than 4,000 solar panels currently on the stadium roof.
The Eaton/Nissan xStorage Building System will be built using a combination of used and new EV battery packs - the equivalent to 63 second life Nissan LEAF battery packs and 85 new Nissan LEAF battery packs. The implementation of the first xStorage system is in progress. The project is expected to be completed in Q1 2018.
Amsterdam ArenA has set up an separate company to exploit the power supply: Amsterdam Energy Arena. Amsterdam Energy Arena generates, stores, distributes and markets energy. The energy storage system plays a central role in this initiative. John Robb, Commercial Buildings Segment Leader, Eaton: "We are proud of our participation in this global innovation and of the perennial connection we have entered into with Amsterdam Energy Arena. Eaton was involved in an early stage with development of the concept, and now our partnership has been officially signed for the next ten years."
Combination of used and new batteries
The energy consumption of the Amsterdam ArenA surges significantly at events and football matches. The xStorage system can help in peak shaving by delivering the temporary large capacity that is needed but does not need to be delivered out of the regular, rural network. Furthermore, the storage system acts as an emergengy power supply in the case of power failure. The power is 3 megawatts, which is comparable to the energy needs of a few thousand households.
"For Eaton this is a special project, just because of the unprecedented size of the storage system intelligently integrated in the existing electrical system." John Robb continues. "Also, the fact that we had to fit such an innovative solution into existing infrastructure, made it one of our most complex and interesting assignments to date. This is a project we feel will be a global frontrunner in power management solutions. “
The stadium of the future
Amsterdam Energy Arena is one of the first concrete results of the stadium’s innovation program – Amsterdam Innovation ArenA – in which companies, governments and knowledge institutions work together to generate new ideas for the future of the stadium. Amsterdam Innovation ArenA brings together innovative concepts and proven solutions in the field of stadium construction, management and implementation, and makes these ideas available for ambitious and sustainable stadiums and recreational projects worldwide. Partners of the Amsterdam Innovation ArenA are, in addition to Eaton and Nissan, the city of Amsterdam, Amsterdam Smart City, Amsterdam ArenA, TNO, KPN, KPMG, Huawei, Microsoft, Philips Lighting, BAM and Honeywell. Balancing the electricity grid “For us, the battery functions as an emergency power supply," says Henk van Raan, Innovation Director of the Amsterdam ArenA. "This is important in international football and makes diesel generators redundant. In addition, we contribute to the balancing of the electricity grid - which is also the basis of the energy company's earnings model. In the future, we want to play a central role in the local smart energy grid by, for example, supplying energy to other buildings in the area. The battery storage system plays a crucial role in this. We also want to be able to connect electric cars in the future. That’s why we placed the battery in the parking garage. The batteries of parked cars can then offer additional storage capacity and act as a flexible 'overflow area' for electricity. A challenge and journey we happily join with Nissan, Eaton and The Mobility House."
Francisco Carranza, Director of Energy Services, Nissan Europe: "We are proud of our participation in this global innovation. Nissan is known for innovation and quality, particularly in our electric vehicles, and we’re proud to be using that expertise to transform the energy management systems of commercial premises. Nissan believes that to build a better, more sustainable world, we must all change the way we live, move and play. This solution will allow the stadium to be truly zero emissions giving the opportunity to the fans to take an active role in their favorite football matches.”
“Amsterdam ArenA will be the first example of an energy storage fulfilling multiple use cases. Realizing this and thus maximizing the value of storage The Mobility House provides the commercialization technology as well as the energy market knowhow” says Marcus Fendt Managing Director of The Mobility House and the Amsterdam Energy ArenA. “Together with our partner Eaton and Nissan we make the Amsterdam ArenA and many more future customers more efficient and sustainable.”
