Sangeetha Ramamoorthy, Technical Manager at Nagman Instruments & Electronics Private Limited. This interview is part of a series conducted by Industrial Automation on the occasion of the International Women’s Day 2019, to celebrate the success of women entrepreneurs and achievers in the industrial automation domain.
Do workplaces of today provide equal opportunity in the true sense gender wise?
Historically female gender has always stood marginalised from society, but things are changing. Workplaces are now formulating policies to help more women to enter the workforce and perform on the same scale as the opposite gender.
Do women in general expect to be treated differently or are they ready for any challenge?
Women by nature are versatile and dynamic and always prefer to take any challenging role.
For a woman, is a career in engineering more demanding than other streams?
The number of women choosing engineering as a career is now on the increase. In the initial years generally women opted for careers only in computers, IT, electronics and instrumentation engineering. But now the times are changing and many women are having successful careers in mechanical, civil and aerospace engineering which are otherwise categorised only for men.
Many successful career women have on record stated that often they have shied away from challenges and regretted that later. What is your experience?
As far as my experience is concerned, my strengths are best exploited by the organisation which in turn gives me career growth as well. So no regrets.
How does India compare, in your view, with other developed countries in this respect?
I am always proud of my country. With various initiatives of women empowerment taking place across the country, we can definitely say that women empowerment has seen a rise in India and this is just the beginning.
What would be your message to young women entering the corporate world?
Have passion for what you do and believe in yourself.
