Steel Frame Completion Signals Rapid Progress Toward 2027 Operational Readiness

NEW DELHI — April 2, 2026 — Agratas, the Tata Group’s global battery business, has announced the completion of the massive steel structure for its upcoming manufacturing facility in Sanand, Gujarat. This structural milestone marks a pivotal shift from site preparation to industrialization, keeping the project on track to begin battery cell production by 2027.

The project is a collaborative effort within the Tata ecosystem, executed by Tata Projects Limited in partnership with Tata Consulting Engineers (TCE). By sourcing over 24,000 tonnes of steel and the majority of construction materials domestically, the project is actively strengthening India’s industrial supply chain while reducing reliance on imports.

Engineering at Scale: The Sanand "Gigafactory"

The scale of the Sanand facility reflects the sheer magnitude of India’s transition toward electric mobility and renewable energy storage.

  • Massive Footprint: The completed steel frame spans 700 metres in length and 150 metres in width, covering a total built-up area of 105,000 square metres.

  • Workforce Intensity: At the peak of this construction phase, more than 2,500 skilled workers were engaged on-site simultaneously to meet rigorous deadlines.

  • Vertical Integration: Rising to 34 metres at its highest point, the structure is designed to house advanced, high-volume automated production lines for battery cells.

Powering India’s Net Zero 2070 Vision

With an initial phase capacity of 20 GWh, the Agratas Sanand facility will be a cornerstone of India’s clean energy infrastructure. To meet the national goal of 500 GW non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030, domestic cell manufacturing is a non-negotiable requirement.

"This milestone reflects the scale, complexity, and pace of execution at Sanand. What began as a vision is now taking shape through strong collaboration and disciplined execution. Together with our partners, we’ve turned our plans into tangible progress." — Sudhir Ghalsasi, Vice President – Capital Delivery, Agratas.

"Our focus is on building the systems, processes, and capabilities required to deliver reliable, world-class batteries made in India for the world, while developing a highly skilled workforce." — Deepak Khare, Vice President – Manufacturing Operations, Agratas.

Regional Impact and Workforce Development

Beyond its industrial output, Agratas is positioning the Sanand plant as a hub for local talent. The facility is expected to generate significant employment across various high-tech functions:

  • Engineering & Technical: Roles in battery chemistry and systems design.

  • Quality Assurance: Maintaining global standards for cell reliability.

  • Operations & Maintenance: Managing the complex automated machinery of a modern gigafactory.

FAQ.

What kind of batteries will the Sanand plant produce?

Agratas will manufacture advanced lithium-ion battery cells tailored for both electric vehicles (EVs) and grid-scale energy storage systems (ESS). These cells are designed to be high-performance, safe, and cost-effective for the Indian and global markets.

When will the first batteries roll off the line?

While the structural work is progressing ahead of schedule, the formal commencement of production is slated for 2027. The intervening months will be used for cleanroom installation, machinery setup, and rigorous testing.

Why is the 20 GWh capacity significant?

A 20 GWh capacity is enough to power roughly 500,000 to 700,000 electric cars annually, depending on battery size. This scale is essential to drive down the cost of EVs in India through localized mass production.
