Reimagining Resources: Vedanta Achieves 100% Fly Ash Utilization and Targets Zero Legacy Waste by 2035

NEW DELHI — March 18, 2026 — To mark Global Recycling Day, Vedanta Limited, India’s leading diversified natural resources conglomerate, has announced a massive sustainability milestone: the recycling or reuse of nearly 15 million tonnes of waste in the 2025 financial year (FY25).

Under the theme “Don’t Think Waste. Think Opportunity,” the company also highlighted its achievement of 100% fly ash utilization—a record it has maintained consistently since FY21. These efforts are part of Vedanta’s "Waste to Wealth" program, an innovation-led strategy to transform industrial by-products into valuable resources for downstream industries.

Circular Economy in Action: Turning Waste into Infrastructure

Vedanta is increasingly integrating its waste streams into the broader Indian economy, specifically within the construction and agricultural sectors.

Key Strategic Partnerships:

  • Green Highways: Partnered with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to supply fly ash for highway construction in and around Odisha.

  • Sustainable Bricks: Collaboration with the Subhalaxmi Cooperative to establish a women-led facility expected to produce one crore fly ash bricks annually.

  • Agricultural Innovation: A partnership with ICAR-CTCRI to utilize red mud (a bauxite refining by-product) for sustainable agriculture and afforestation.

  • Road Construction: Research with CSIR and IIT Kharagpur to use high-volume, low-toxicity (HVLT) waste as a sustainable alternative to river sand.

Product Innovation: The Rise of "Green" Metals

Beyond managing by-products, Vedanta is pioneering low-carbon and recycled primary products to support the global shift toward sustainable manufacturing.

  • Restora Ultra: A low-carbon "green" aluminium brand.

  • EcoZen: A sustainable, low-carbon zinc offering.

  • Recycled Copper: For the first time in India, the company has produced low-carbon copper utilizing recycled copper scrap.

  • Metal Recovery: Through a partnership with Runaya, Vedanta is recovering zinc, lead, and silver from residues, effectively creating secondary raw material streams.

“At Vedanta Limited, sustainability and ESG are at the core of our operations. We are committed to building a sustainable ecosystem by reinforcing waste as a resource. Our focus remains on minimising waste and maximising reuse to contribute meaningfully to India's environmental goals.” — Vedanta Spokesperson

FAQ.

What is "Fly Ash" and why is 100% utilization important?

Fly ash is a fine powder produced as a by-product of burning pulverised coal in electric power generation plants. If not managed, it can pose environmental risks. By achieving 100% utilization, Vedanta ensures this material is used in cement, bricks, and roads, preventing it from entering landfills and reducing the need for virgin construction materials.

What is a "Zinc Fumer Plant"?

A Zinc Fumer Plant is a specialised industrial facility that extracts high-value metals from waste residues (like jarosite) generated during zinc refining. Vedanta’s plant recovers thousands of tonnes of zinc, lead, and silver annually, which significantly reduces the need for land-intensive hazardous waste storage.

What is "Zero Legacy Waste"?

Legacy waste refers to the accumulated waste stored in landfills or stockpiles over many years. Vedanta’s goal to achieve zero legacy waste by 2035 means they plan to clear all historical waste deposits by recycling or repurposing them, ensuring no industrial waste remains as a permanent environmental liability.
