Looking back at the early 1980s when Dynalog was formed, what was the initial market gap or vision that triggered its creation, and how does that original blueprint compare to the company’s identity today?

Dynalog was born from a very simple insight: India needed its own brains behind the machines, not just imported boxes. That founding vision – to design and build mission‑critical electronics in India, for India and the world – still defines who we are today, only at far greater scale and complexity.

In the early 1980s, the market gap was stark: universities, PSUs and emerging industries were hungry for microprocessor know‑how, but had very limited access to indigenous hardware platforms they could learn on, modify and trust.

Dynalog’s blueprint was to democratise embedded computing – by putting robust, affordable, Indian‑designed systems into the hands of engineers and technicians – and that ethos has evolved into today’s role as a full‑stack provider of industrial computing, networking and defence electronics for high‑stakes environments.

In the early days, Dynalog was highly regarded for its microprocessor trainer kits  and microcontroller evaluation boards. How critical was this phase in building Dynalog’s core hardware engineering DNA? 

Those microprocessor trainer kits and microcontroller evaluation boards were far more than products; they were our laboratory, where generations of engineers cut their teeth on hardware, firmware and real‑world debugging.

The discipline we learned there – designing transparent, well‑documented, repeatable platforms – directly paved the way for today’s complex industrial PCs and embedded systems, where the same engineering DNA shows up in deterministic performance, long‑term availability and deep support for legacy as well as cutting‑edge interfaces.

From educational kits to ruggedised industrial PCs – was it hard convincing user industries to adopt specialised industrial computing over standard commercial hardware?

Transitioning from educational kits to ruggedised industrial PCs meant entering environments where a single crash could shut down a refinery, a power substation or a rolling mill, so ‘good enough’ commercial hardware was simply not acceptable.

Yes, it was hard at first to convince users to move away from off‑the‑shelf commercial PCs, but by combining proof‑of‑concept pilots, lifecycle cost modelling and field data on failure rates, we demonstrated that purpose‑built industrial computing – with extended temperature ranges, EMI/EMC compliance and long‑term supply commitments – delivers significantly lower total cost of ownership than consumer‑grade hardware.

How is Dynalog positioning itself to address the massive security and bandwidth demands of modern Industry 4.0 and smart infrastructure projects?

As the focus shifted from isolated machines to hyper‑connected factories, cities and utilities, we deliberately expanded from ‘just computing’ into industrial switches, serial gateways, edge connectivity and IIoT‑ready platforms.

Our positioning for Industry 4.0 rests on three pillars: defence‑grade security thinking applied to OT networks, partnerships with global leaders in rugged networking such as Moxa for bandwidth‑rich infrastructure, and indigenous design of edge systems that can enforce policy, log events and participate in zero‑trust architectures rather than simply move packets.

Could you share how the design and testing philosophy changes when you are engineering systems meant to withstand the extreme environmental stresses of a defense contract?

When we design for defence – whether for ground, naval or airborne platforms – the philosophy shifts from ‘robust’ to ‘survivability’: systems must operate under shock, vibration, salt fog, sand, humidity and temperature extremes while still meeting tight SWaP and EMI/EMC constraints.

That drives a different behaviour inside the company: multidisciplinary design reviews with Army, Navy, Air Force and DRDO stakeholders, aggressive HALT/HASS regimes, full MIL‑STD and AS9100D compliance, and an obsession with configuration control, so that every deployed system can be traced, replicated and supported across decades of service life.

What does it mean for Dynalog's engineering team to meet the zero-failure tolerances demanded by India's space program? 

Being trusted by ISRO on missions like Chandrayaan and Mangalyaan is both a technical challenge and a cultural one: you design knowing that there is no ‘service call’ in deep space.

For our engineering teams, zero‑failure tolerance means designing with graceful degradation, redundancy where it matters most, exhaustive verification and validation, and an honest, data‑driven feedback loop from every mission so that each successive system carries forward lessons learned in hardware, software and process.

With the government’s intense push toward domestic manufacturing and self-reliance (Atmanirbhar Bharat), what is the long-term growth trajectory for Dynalog?

The government’s push for Atmanirbhar Bharat has turned what used to be a strategic choice – investing in indigenous capability – into a national imperative, and Dynalog is responding with scale, capital and partnerships.

Our planned new manufacturing base and enhanced design centres are aimed at matching the expectations of large defence and infrastructure buyers, while global partnerships now focus on co‑development and technology transfer in areas like power systems, drones and secure networking, positioning Dynalog as a homegrown alternative to foreign suppliers rather than a mere importer or assembler.

What is your primary focus for the next 5 to 10 years to ensure Dynalog leads India's charge in becoming a global electronics hub?

Over the next decade, our primary focus is to move decisively from being a supplier of excellent hardware to being a long‑term strategic advisor and systems partner across defence, power, transport, smart cities and critical infrastructure.

We intend to lead India’s charge toward becoming a global electronics hub by capturing more value in system design, software, lifecycle support and data‑driven services, while maintaining the core promise that has guided us since the 1980s: when the application is mission‑critical, India can and should trust an indigenous company to capture the requirement, connect the ecosystem, and champion the outcome.

Mr Akshay Adhalrao is the Managing Director of Dynalog India Ltd, a Mumbai-headquartered electronics, industrial automation and defence solutions company founded in 1984. Over the past decade, he has led Dynalog’s evolution as a vertically integrated solutions partner, strengthening the company’s customer-focused approach and building specialised teams aligned to client and industry needs.

Under his leadership, Dynalog continues to serve critical sectors such as manufacturing, power, oil & gas, smart infrastructure and defence, with capabilities spanning industrial networking, rugged computing, embedded systems, data acquisition, industrial connectivity and mission-critical electronics solutions. Mr Akshay Adhalrao holds a Bachelor’s degree in Management Studies from Mumbai University and a Management Graduate degree in Marketing from the Fisher College of Business, Ohio State University, USA. He is also associated with the Entrepreneurs’ Organization as a board member.
